What do you think about when I mention Rolex? What about when I mention Steve Jobs? What comes to mind when you think of Mercedes-Benz, Kim Kardashian or Italy?

I’m sure we all have opinions on each and every one of those mentioned above, negative or positive.

Now I have to ask another set of questions. How many of those people do you think have ever owned a Rolex? Met Steve Jobs or Kim Kardashian? How many of those people drive a Mercedez-Benz or have been to Italy? Maybe a few could answer yes to one or two of those, but most people can’t say yes to any of them.

How, then, can people have such firm opinions and feelings on things they don’t have, places they’ve never been and people they’ve never met? The answer is, in a word, branding.

Brands are not just for products, but also for people, things, and even countries! The brand is a sort of mind-association device. It’s a sort of institutionalized prejudice – people judge you by the image you put out to the world. Yes, you have a brand!

Sometimes the best move a business can make is to consult with a branding expert who can then find the best possible image for your company to be viewed by. If you don’t make your own brand, people will make one for you and it may not be the image you want them to have.
